Recipe Scaler

Paste an ingredient list, tell the scaler how many servings the recipe makes and how many you want, and it resizes every quantity instantly. It understands whole numbers, decimals and fractions like 1/2 or 1 1/2.

How recipe scaling works

The scaling factor is simply the servings you want divided by the servings the recipe makes. Every ingredient is multiplied by that factor. The arithmetic is easiest in grams — convert your recipe first with our ingredient converters, then scale.

For a full walkthrough, including what does not scale linearly, read how to scale a recipe up or down.

The scaler understands pints, quarts and gallons alongside cups and spoons. If a recipe uses a measurement you are unsure of — a half-pint, a dash, a jigger — see pints, quarts & half-pints explained.

Recipe scaling FAQ

How do I double or halve a recipe?
Enter the servings the recipe makes now and the servings you want. To double, set servings from 4 to 8; to halve, from 4 to 2. The scaler multiplies every quantity for you.
Does the recipe scaler change baking time?
Baking time changes very little when you scale a recipe — pan size matters far more. Keep the batter at a similar depth by choosing a larger pan or splitting between two.
Should I scale salt and spices the same as everything else?
For large changes, scale salt, strong spices and leavening a little less than the full factor, then taste. Seasoning intensifies faster than you expect.
